What it measures — and what it does not

A hand refractometer measures how strongly a liquid bends light, and from that gives a reading on the Brix scale. For a water-miscible coolant that reading is the basis for the concentration in your tank — the single figure that decides corrosion protection, tool life, foaming and how long a sump lasts.

What it does not measure is everything else: pH, nitrite, bacterial load, tramp oil. A refractometer tells you how much concentrate is in the water, not whether the emulsion is still healthy. The weekly checks required by German TRGS 611 are set out in The functions of coolant.

The reading is not the concentration

This is where most measurements go wrong. The Brix value has to be multiplied by a product-specific refractometer factor before it means anything:

concentration % = Brix reading × factor

The factor differs per product, and within one range it is not constant. For EASYCUT coolants:

BASE201 — factor 1.6
UNI301, PRO302, BVR301 — factor 1.3
For any other coolant, take the factor from its data sheet.

Five °Brix therefore means 8.0 % with BASE201 and 6.5 % with UNI301. Read BASE201 with the wrong factor and you are running 23 % lean — with the corrosion, short sump life and tool wear that follow. If more than one coolant runs in the shop, write the factor on the machine.

Reading it right

The scale is designed for a sample at around 20 °C; a hot sample straight from a running machine reads low. Let it settle, or take the sample at the end of the shift.

Clean the prism before and after every measurement — residue from the last sample is the second most common source of a wrong number. Calibrate with distilled water to zero. And read the boundary between the light and dark fields, not the middle of the blur: on a used emulsion loaded with tramp oil the line goes soft, and a soft line is itself information — it says the fluid needs attention.

What you need it for

Concentration is checked daily, or at least at every shift change where consumption is high. Guide values are 6 to 10 % for turning and milling and 4 to 6 % for grinding, with the exact figure in the product data sheet.

Measuring is only half the job — correcting is the other half. When the tank has drifted, the top-up mix has to be thinner than the original fill, and by how much is arithmetic: the coolant calculator does it from your readings. The background is in .
