EASYCUT VEG001 is a water-miscible coolant built on plant-derived ester oil rather than mineral oil, made in Germany. That single change puts it outside the BASE201 → UNI301 → PRO302 ladder: it is not a stronger version of the semi-synthetics, it is a different answer to a different question.
The question is what happens around the machine rather than in the cut. Ester-based fluids are chosen where skin contact, workplace air and disposal carry real weight — where the people at the machines, the works council or the environmental audit are part of the decision, not just the tool life.
VEG001 costs around 61 % more per litre than UNI301. In running terms that is roughly 0.98 EUR per litre of working emulsion at 8 %, against 0.51 for BASE201 — near enough double.
So it is worth being direct about when not to buy it. If the decision is being made on tool life, surface finish or cost per part, one of the semi-synthetics is the right answer and VEG001 is an expensive way to reach the same result. It earns its price where biodegradability, skin compatibility and disposal are the criteria — and where that is the case, the difference per part is usually smaller than the first look at the price per litre suggests.
Ester-based fluids reward careful maintenance more than mineral-oil products do, and punish neglect faster. Two habits matter most:
Concentration. Measure with the refractometer and apply the product-specific factor from the data sheet — the reading alone is not the concentration. Running rich is not a safety margin here; it is wasted money at this price per litre.
Tank hygiene. Keep tramp oil out and filtration working. The weekly nitrite and pH checks required by German TRGS 611 are covered in The functions of coolant; water hardness and mixing order are in Mixing coolant and water quality.
The drum costs around 17 % less per litre than the canister and gives roughly 2600 litres of working emulsion at 8 %. At this price level that 17 % is the largest single saving available on the product, which makes the drum the sensible size as soon as the trial is over. The mixing unit mounts directly on it and keeps the concentration repeatable — worth more here than on a cheaper fluid.
The data sheet and safety data sheet are on this page as downloads; where each product group fits is explained in Types of metalworking coolant.
